This is because study after study cites the increased health problems related to childhood and adolescent obesity, while the rates of obesity continue to astonishingly rise in adults and the young. Childhood and adolescent obesity and overweight rates have tripled in the past 30 years to an incredible one out of five to three out of ten being obese.

Everything from junk food to hormone mimicking chemicals to television commercials has been blamed for the increase in overweight young people, but whatever the complex reasons behind the troubling increase in obesity rates, there is evidence of an increase in health problems going right along with the increase in weight. Once primarily the chronic diseases of adults, illnesses like Type 2 diabetes and heart disease are now appearing in increasing numbers of children and adolescents.

Now, a study published in Science Daily in March, 2011, shows that overweight adolescents might be at risk for weakened bones. This is a time when the physical body should be at its best, with strong bones and good overall health. But, researchers have found that overweight teens have less bone mass, indicating less bone strength when compared to normal weight peers.

Additional health problems include an increase in blood pressure, high fat levels in the blood and increased belly fat. This fat around the middle seems to be closely linked to the presence of lower density bones, heart disease and diabetes in the same way it is in adults. Researchers feel that lack of vigorous exercise is more to blame than calories. Medical research shows that strenuous exercise makes the bones release a hormone that reduces many of the obesity related health risks. Yes, that's correct, the bones act as endocrine organs, releasing regulating hormones. Researchers theorize that decreased bone mass in adolescence will lead to increased problems with osteoporosis and bone fractures in later years.

Medical researchers are seeing increases in obesity rates in all age groups including infants. Children who are obese in their pre-teen years have an 80 percent chance of being obese adults. These numbers are worrisome as they indicate a future rapid increase in many of the chronic diseases already plaguing the United States and much of the developed world.

In addition to heart disease, breathing problems, insulin resistance and weak bones, sleep problems are also caused by being overweight. This further exacerbates health problems, as the body repairs and heals during normal sleep.

So, what can be done? Families can make a group effort at learning more about healthy lifestyles and implementing some changes that support good health and optimal weight. This starts at the dinner table and extends throughout the day. Look for foods high in health benefits and low in calories like fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fish. Avoid processed and packaged foods and stay away from fast food entirely. It may take a while to adjust, but an apple with peanut butter is an infinitely more healthful and delicious snack than salt and fat laden fries.

When it comes to weight loss plans for teenagers and everyone in your family, you can talk about ways to increase activity, even if it is just rotating walking the family dog through each member of the family. Try some easy sports, get a pool membership this summer, join a gym, and make it a goal to increase activity rates every day. How to Lose Weight Plan - Why The TV Should Be Turned Off

Study after study has linked hours spent in front of the television with the increasing obesity rates, many looking at different aspects of this phenomena but all drawing the same basic conclusion. Increased television viewing leads to weight gain! Not a surprising finding but one that affects an increasing number of Americans and others throughout the developed world. Hopefully, after reading this, you'll turn off the TV and get outdoors and start some healthy exercising. Just taking a walk can be of great benefit to your weight loss goals and your health.

You might blame TV for many of society's troubles, but it's an established fact that the pounds slowly add up as activity levels drop. You have to burn more calories than you consume to lose weight, and watching TV barely moves the calorie burning meter. The average American spends 28 hours per week in front of a TV, and many Americans spend significantly more hours than that sitting on the couch being entertained. Unbelievably, TV watching is the third most time-consuming activity for today's adults, following only work and sleep. Children and adults are doubly affected, by both the lack of movement and the insidious effect of commercials for high calorie junk food.

A study conducted by Stanford University's Center for Research in Disease prevention found that obese children spend a large portion of their time watching television. The study cites three effects, less physical activity, increased calorie consumption while watching television and a surprisingly reduced resting metabolism, meaning even at rest they are burning fewer calories than normal. Researchers analyzed a study specifically designed to test the relationship between television viewing and body weight. They found evidence supporting the assumption that increased TV time causes increased fatness and that reducing the number of hours in front of the television shows promise for preventing childhood obesity.

Childhood obesity rates are a strong indicator of later adult obesity rates, and the reduction of overweight children should proportionately lead to a reduction in adult obesity rates and the chronic diseases that accompany obesity.

Another study analyzed the effects of television commercials on children, finding that especially for children younger than seven; they play a major role in childhood obesity rates. Children who only watch videos or commercial-free television have a greatly reduced risk of obesity. So, there is more than just inactivity at work. Researchers factored out variables that might also be in play such as the mother's weight and education, the child's physical activity and still, the effects of increased exposure to commercials showed a corresponding increased risk for childhood obesity.

This study noted that children see about 30 hours of food advertising every week which peaks during Saturday children's programming when children are exposed to food advertising once every five minutes. Savvy advertising makes even the most empty-calorie food seem incredibly appealing to children. This translates to desire for these sugary and fatty foods.

So what about adults? One study involving over 6000 adult, working men found that the number of hours spent watching television was strongly associated with obesity. The study raised the question of cause and effect, is increased television viewing a result of obesity or vice versa? Researchers suggested that increased TV time means an increase in calorie intake, frequently the same empty calorie, high sugar, high fat foods that are advertised on TV.

So, turn off the TV, grab your walking shoes or jump on the exercise equipment and start burning those calories!

Although calorie intake between the two groups is similar, the ones who eat breakfast report a small increase in physical activity when compared to the non-breakfast eaters.

A particularly interesting study analyzed the television viewing habits of those who successfully lost weight and kept it off. The national average is 28 hours of television viewing per week. Over 60 percent of the NWCR success stories watch 10 or fewer hours per week, a significant difference from the national average! Only 12 percent watch 21 or more hours a week. This study found that the hours spent in front of the television acts as a predictor of success or failure at maintaining optimal weight levels. So get off the couch and get active!
